Aka: fruit or flowers?
The follow options are by no means the ONLY way you can decorate a semi-naked cake, but these are the most popular ways. Sugar flowers don’t work so well on these types of cakes so here’s the 4 main options:
Fabulous Floristry
This is the Poster Girl for semi-naked cakes - I stack the cake with blocks between the tiers that we fill with fresh flowers, which you need to order from your florist. The blocks give extra height so you get a fabulously tall show-stopper of a cake.
For this one I need lots of flowers, as I need to hide the blocks…if you’ve chosen a semi-naked cake because it’s easy on the budget then this might not be the most budget-freindly way to decorate it. This one can take a while for me to set up so it isn’t always possible to create this look if your venue has a very tight cake set-up slot.
2. Flexible floristry
For this option, the cakes are stacked directly with just a few groups of flowers here and there. Again you need to order the flowers from your florist and I’ll arrange on the cake.
For this design we can use as many - or as few - flowers as you want. This is a great way to get the lux-look but working WITH your floristry budget, rather than dictating it.
3. Fruit and flowers
The cake can be decorated with a mixture of fruit and flowers. I’ll bring the fruit, the florist supplies the flowers. This uses fewer flowers again.
4. Fruity
With this design, I’ll supply all the fruit. You can specifiy what types of fruit you’d like or I can freestyle! I love using figs and, if I can get them, redcurrants plus blackberries, strawberries etc. Physallis is great if you want an autumnal look. Always looks (and smells) delicious!
The possibilities are endless though so feel free to ask for other ideas. Chocolate or carmel drips, gold leaf, macarons…you decide!
Whatever you decide on, I will finishe the cake myself, including putting any flowers on.
